• Vigilance is Key to Hotel Pest Control

Hotels must be ever vigilant regarding hotel pest control, because the opportunities for infestation are vast. Not only must they hire pest control companies to maintain a regular schedule of spraying and inspection, but management and employees need to be aware of the possibility of the problem as well.
All areas where trash is stored must be kept clean, hosed down, and the bins covered. This helps reduce the presence of flies. Another way flies gain entry into a hotel is through open doors. Doors are constantly opening and closing, and over a period of time this will let in quite a few flies. In employee only areas, installing a wind machine over the doors is a huge help. When installed over the door this machine will let out a blast of air when the door is opened, making it impossible for a fly to dart in. Flies can be especially rampant in the kitchen areas of hotels, and if left unchecked they will lay eggs inside the laundry bags where the soiled towels are kept. In the week leading up to the time the laundry company changes out their towels for them, these old towels will have already become home to numerous fly larvae. As you probably know, fly larvae become maggots.

Another area of concern, of course, is the prevention of cockroach infestation. If you were to see a cockroach at a hotel you are staying at, it does not necessarily mean that the hotel is not clean. Cockroaches travel great distances inside corrugated cardboard boxes. If the boxes containing the equipment and supplies that the hotel orders sit around a vast warehouse for months, there is a good probability that more than a few roaches have gained entry to them. The reason for this is that cockroaches, especially the small ones, like to find places to hide, and the corrugated boxes provide ample opportunities for hiding in a safe, snug place. Once a delivery order arrives at the hotel, it is important that the employees unpack the boxes in a swift manner, break them down, and put them in the recycle bin. Another way that cockroaches gain access into hotels is that they come in through cracks and holes. It is important that management make sure the pest control company inspect the walls and ceilings for areas that need to be sealed. A routine inspection by management of the kitchen areas and supply rooms for such problems is a good idea as well.

Mice and ants are two other kinds of pests that can trouble a hotel if they are careless. Both pests will show up after a hard rain, or if cleanliness is not kept up to high industry standards. For instance, if employees are not cleaning the tables or sweeping the floors properly after a rush, it is like leaving treats out for pests. This can make hotel pest control more difficult, and even the steady employment of a professional pest control company will not keep pests out if the hotel is careless.
